Choose Between Managed and Self-Hosted WebSockets
The decision is not based on server price alone; compare connection volume, operations, monitoring, scaling, and the skills available to the team.

Real-time connections may power chat, typing and read states, or warn a user that a record being edited has changed. Each path has a different connection, message, and peak-load profile, so no single service is best for every product.
A managed service such as Pusher reduces operational work and provides dashboards, monitoring, and ready-made environments. It fits when its pricing covers the actual scale. A self-hosted option such as Laravel Reverb offers more control and may become economical at higher volume, but the team then owns servers, scaling, upgrades, monitoring, and incident response.
Measure concurrent connections, messages, bandwidth, and required regions, then calculate total cost rather than the direct bill alone. Start with the simplest option that meets reliability goals, and define thresholds that trigger a new evaluation. Check current prices and capabilities before deciding because they change over time.
