Pragmatic, Perfectionist, and Cowboy Developers
A good developer balances quality, time, and risk, increasing rigor according to the sensitivity of the system.
Omar Alalwi Article
A pragmatic developer chooses the most suitable solution, balances quality, time, and cost, measures before optimizing, and considers maintenance. They can build an MVP quickly within a clean structure, define boundaries for a growing system, and address a measured performance cause.
An excessive perfectionist always pursues the “best” solution and may add more layers and patterns than a simple feature needs, delaying business value. A cowboy developer works without planning, tests, security, or maintenance in mind, finishing quickly today while creating a large future cost. Sometimes the environment and delivery pressure push developers toward this behavior.
There is no fixed ratio between pragmatism and rigor. Financial and safety-critical systems require stronger safeguards than low-risk applications. The skill is knowing where shortcuts are unacceptable and where complexity itself becomes waste, while excluding careless development in every case.
