How an Open-Source Project Can Open a Career Door
A strong GitHub project can demonstrate a graduate's ability before an interview and prompt employers to make contact directly.

A recent graduate caught my attention on LinkedIn by publishing a strong open-source project on GitHub. His profile contained other projects that demonstrated consistent learning and practice, even though he did not know me and had not applied for the role I was helping to fill.
I contacted him and encouraged him to apply. He reached the final three candidates out of twelve, but the more experienced candidate received the offer. That candidate later recommended the graduate as his replacement at his previous company, giving him an entry into the market where he proved himself.
An open-source project does not guarantee employment, but it turns a claim of skill into reviewable evidence: decisions, code, documentation, and consistency. For a student or graduate, that evidence can be more effective than waiting for a role that already requires experience.
